The cloud explained
In just over a decade the requirement for companies to build, manage & support there IT infrastructure has dramatically changed, as a wise man recently commented; why would I build a power-station when all I require is electricity!
The term “cloud computing” is everywhere, but what does it mean? In the simplest of terms, cloud computing is storing and accessing data and software programs over the Internet instead of your computer’s hard drive.
Cloud computing gives you the ability to use compute resources without the need to purchase and maintain physical servers. Cloud solutions can enable IT transformations for organisations to facilitate mobile work styles for individuals while retaining the robust security and control that enterprise IT and business demands. For ease of explanation the cloud can be defined in three distinct categories.
Also known as Enterprise cloud resides on your intranet or within your hosted data centre, ultimately all management, maintenance and updating of hardware is your responsibility, servers will need to be replaced over time, this can prove expensive.
On the plus side you are not restricted by the set infrastructure a public cloud offers, you can provision the infrastructure to meet the requirements of your users.
In this instance, you are not responsible for any of the management of the infrastructure, your data is stored in the cloud provider’s data centre and they manage the environment. This is appealing as it reduces lead times in testing and deployment and is billed on a per use basis.
The draw backs are that you get what you are given in terms of resource which can lead to certain users being under provisioned.
Hybrid cloud is a cloud computing environment that uses a mix of on-premises, private cloud and third-party, public cloud services, the two environments are configured to work together. This can give the best
of both worlds but does require more work and infrastructure and can become very expensive.
